Bad//Dreems – ‘Quality Meats’ Live Album 2024
To witness Bad//Dreems live should be a rite of passage for any self-respecting fan of Australian music; you'll never view live music the same way again. Tyler Jenke, Rolling Stone
It has been over a decade since Bad//Dreems emerged from humble beginnings in an Adelaide white goods’ warehouse in the shadow of the West End Brewery (RIP) and began a journey that has taken them around Australia and the world. They have grown to become one of the country’s most respected guitar acts, known for their brawny rock and roll with brains, which has sought to strip away the veneer of comfortable suburban Australian banality and reveal the stories and characters that lay beneath.
Their 4th album Hoo Ha!, released in May 2023, saw the band reach a new level of recognition, with an ARIA nomination for best rock album and top 10 debut, as well as #2 on Double J’s album of the year and SA music award for best group.
At this point in their career, it seems fitting for the band to release their first live album ‘Quality Meats’ taken from two performances, 7 months apart, which essentially bookended the Hoo Ha! tour, it captures that band in all its live magnificence, in front of a sold-out Corner Hotel and as headliners of ‘Nice Day to go to The Club Festival’ at Port Noarlunga Football Club, in their hometown of Adelaide.
The recordings showcase all that defines a Bad//Dreems’ live show: the duelling guitars of Alex Cameron and Ali Wells and the taut and propulsive rhythm section of Miles Wilson and Deon Slaverio. Which of course provides the canvas for frontman Ben Marwe to weave his magic, inhabiting the distinctive characters of the songs as only he can, flitting between absurdity and aggression; malevolence and mirth; bogan pride and braggadocio.
The songs featured capture the gamut of the bands themes: confusion and anger of a protagonist eking out an existence in today’s world (Cuffed & Collared, Northern, Mansfield 6.0, Hoping For), fevered explorations of the dystopian Australian underbelly (Southern Heat, Naden, See You Tomorrow) as well as their unflinching call for truth telling and justice for Aboriginal Australia (Jack).
A limited pressing of ‘Quality Meats’ is now available for pre-order, while Mansfield 6.0 and Cuffed & Collared are now streaming on all platforms.
